Airflow – What Specs Matter?

ACH (Air Changes Per Hour) measures how many times the entire volume of air within a room is exchanged with clean air in an hour. It’s a critical metric for understanding the capacity of air purifiers to remove contaminants. A higher ACH indicates faster air exchange and improved air quality.

CFM (Cubic Feet Per Minute) measures the rate at which air flows through an air filtration system. CFM is important to assess the power and capacity of these systems to clean the air. Once the volume of a space is defined, you can calculate the CFM required to achieve a targeted ACH. You can also calculate the ACH you will achieve with a machine of a given CFM. CFM = ACH x Volume/Minutes per hour

CADR: To protect consumers from unsubstantiated claims, the Association of Home Appliance Manufacturers created the AHAM Verifide® Standard for Clean Air Delivery Rate – or CADR. CADR focuses on an air purifier’s ability to filter out specific contaminants, including Smoke, Dust, and Pollen. This standard was developed for Consumer-grade air purifiers and is not applicable for high CFM Commercial and Medical grade equipment.

Commercial Air Purifiers

Commercial Air Purifiers work to enhance indoor air quality by removing pollutants and contaminants from the air. They operate by drawing in air from the surroundings using a fan and passing it through a series of filters. 

The initial pre-filter captures larger particles like dust and hair, preventing them from clogging the main filters. The core of the purifier is its multi-stage filtration system, which includes a HEPA filter for capturing small particles, an activated carbon filter for adsorbing odors and gases, and a pre-filter to capture the largest particles and extend the life of the machine. 

Some Commercial Air Purifiers also include UVGI for inactivating harmful microorganisms. These machines are designed to operate quietly in shared, indoor spaces and have intuitive digital controls.

Air scrubber Machines

High Performance Portable Air Cleaners

High-performance Portable Air Cleaners (PACs) serve similar functions to Commercial Air Purifiers, in terms of improving indoor air quality but are designed for stringent environments and applications.

PACs always include UVGI in addition to high-grade HEPA filters. These units may produce more noise due to their larger capacity and more powerful fans. These machines offer a simple user interface.

Ultraviolet Germicidal Irradiation (UVGI)

Ultraviolet Germicidal Irradiation is a technology that harnesses the power of ultraviolet (UV) light, exposing microorganisms such as bacteria, viruses, and mold to a specific wavelength of UV-C light, typically around 254 nanometers.

This UV-C light disrupts the DNA and RNA of these microorganisms, rendering them unable to reproduce. UVGI systems are commonly used in various applications, including air purification to help improve indoor air.

UVGI when deployed as an additional disinfecting stage in a Commercial Air Purifier or PAC is highly effective due to the proximity of the airflow to the UV source.
